The bluegrass Opera

A 21st-Century Performing Arts Company

OUR HISTORY & MISSION

The Bluegrass Opera is a 501(c)(3) non-profit performing arts company based in Lexington -- the heart of Kentucky's beautiful "Bluegrass" region. Founded in 2008, the group is a unique collective of singer-actors that specializes in bringing new musical stage works to life -- including musicals, operas, and everything in between. Now embarking on our tenth season, we have received hundreds of works from writers and composers throughout the U.S. and some two dozen other countries. As of this season, we will have produced nearly twenty of them in their entirety and presented excerpts from dozens more. Our mission has three distinct parts:

1. To develop, premiere, and champion deserving new works for the musical stage that will enrich, educate, and entertain our diverse community;

2. To establish central Kentucky as a globally-known hub for such works, both among creative professionals and among theater-going audiences;

3. To provide professional opportunities for artists of all ages and backgrounds in the production of new musical stage works.
